Opportunities Search Console already knows about

Page-2 near-misses

Queries ranking roughly positions 8–20 with enough impressions to matter — the cheapest traffic to win.

Best next step

Each query gets a clear action: improve an existing URL, or write a new post aimed at that keyword.

Low-CTR pages

URLs that already rank but under-click vs a rough expected CTR curve — rewrite title and description first.

Clicks within reach

A ballpark of monthly clicks if those near-misses moved into the top of page 1. Directional, not a promise.

The basics

What are striking distance keywords?

Striking distance keywords are searches where your site already ranks, but just off the top of page 1: usually average positions 8 to 20 in Google Search Console. Google has decided your page is relevant. It just isn't ranking high enough to get many clicks yet.

That makes them the cheapest traffic you can win. You don't need a new topic, new backlinks or months of waiting for a fresh page to be trusted. A more focused page, a clearer title, or a dedicated post for the exact query is often enough to move up a few places, and the first few positions on page 1 get most of the clicks.

Improve a page or write a new post?

Improve the page that already ranks

If one of your pages ranks for the query and is about the same topic, make it answer that query directly: use the phrase in the title and a heading, add the section searchers expect, and link to it from related posts.

Write a new post for the query

If the ranking page is your home page or only mentions the topic in passing, Google is guessing. A dedicated post aimed at that exact query usually does better than stretching an unrelated page.

Fix titles on pages people skip

Pages with plenty of impressions but a click rate far below their position are a title and meta description problem. Rewrite them to match what people searched for.

Do it by hand

How to find striking distance keywords in Search Console

You can find them yourself in Google Search Console. It takes a few minutes per site:

  1. 1Open Search Console, pick your property and go to Performance → Search results.
  2. 2Set the date range to the last 28 days and turn on Average CTR and Average position.
  3. 3In the Queries tab, add a filter for Position: greater than 7. Search Console has no "between" filter, so you'll ignore anything past 20 by hand.
  4. 4Sort by Impressions so the queries with the most searches come first.
  5. 5Click a query and switch to the Pages tab to see which URL ranks for it, then decide: improve that page or write a new post.

The free report does all of that in about a minute, adds the page-by-page next step and the pages with low click rates, and saves it to your account. Get my free report →
